Tips For Finding a Job After Layoff

Laid Off From Your Job? What to Do...

If you've been laid off from your job there are things that you can do immediately to help increase your chances of finding employment faster. If you were laid off because of downsizing or other reason beyond your control and you are leaving on good terms ask your supervisor or boss for a letter of recommendation. You can also ask your co-workers for letters of recommendation explaining your quality of work, how well you worked with others and any accomplishments they are aware of.

Before you leave your old job email your coworkers to tell them you are leaving and how they can contact you in the future. Keep the email short and objective, this is not the time to bash the company or your boss. Make a copy of all your contacts and important documents by sending them to your personal email address, downloading them to a zip disk and print them off so you have hard copies as well. Next delete all your personal emails from your work computer and then empty the trash folder to delete them for good.

Reach out to peers in your industry to let them know that you are back on the market and job hunting. Start by opening a free LinkedIn account http://www.linkedin.com/ The "find a colleague" feature that uses first and last name is helpful for finding classmates, former co-workers, friends and other contacts. The LinkedIn Directory which is alphabetical directory is also a good way to look people up by name. The more people who know that you are looking for a job the faster you'll have job offers.

Next draft a current resume and send it to any friends or colleagues that you have reconnected with so they can forward your resume to anyone that they know who may have job openings. Browse available jobs online by company, location or industry and apply online using websites like www.job.com , www.snagajob.com/ , www.monster.com/ www.careerbuilder.com/ .

Another option is to register with a few temporary staffing and recruiting agencies such as http://www.adeccousa.com/Pages/Welcome.aspx , http://www.kellyservices.com , http://www.manpower.com/ the advantage of working for a recruiting and staffing firm is that they may have a job opening right away, it's a good way to try out a job and see if you are going to like it. Most staffing agencies offer medical benefits, holiday pay, referral bonuses, and 401k plans.

The key to finding a job fast is to get out there and actively search using all the methods above. If at first you do not succeed don't give up just keep networking and attend networking events listed on the Minnesota Networking Calendar http://www.minnesotanetworking.com/networking_events.html

Business-to-business networking is about building relationships based on trust, and enabling your business to grow.

It's said that on average each person has 250 contacts. Each of those people is an opportunity.

What if you could reach out to those 250 people and gain access to the other 249 people that they know?

If you trust each other, you may be able to do just that.

Just think what it would be like to gain access to over 60,000 possible clients...
